What Buda Properties Need From Turf

The City of Buda has been under Stage 3 drought restrictions since November 4, 2024, and as of September 2026 it is still there. Outdoor watering is allowed once a week only: odd-numbered addresses on Wednesday, even-numbered on Thursday, and only between 7 and 11 in the morning or 7 and 11 at night. Buda draws from two sources, the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer and the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority, and both are in Stage 3. The trigger was the Lovelady monitor well\u2019s ten-day average dropping below 462.7 feet above sea level. This is not a bad summer, it is Buda\u2019s normal now. Nearly two years of once-a-week watering is not a condition natural grass survives well.

Residential Turf for Buda's Once-a-Week Watering Schedule

Residential turf is the most common project we take on in Buda. When a homeowner is limited to one watering day a week and only four hours on that day, a living lawn is already on life support. Synthetic turf does not need the water at all, so Stage 3 does not touch it. The same Texas sun that bakes a Buda front yard in August has no effect on UV-stabilized fibers, and the rocky Hill Country soil that makes sod establishment difficult is irrelevant when the grass is synthetic. For newer HOA-governed subdivisions, Texas House Bill 2269, effective September 1, 2025, amended Property Code Section 202.007 so a homeowners association cannot require a property owner to plant, install, or maintain living grass or turf. A companion law, House Bill 517, added Section 202.008, requiring an association to suspend any grass-maintenance rule while a property is under a watering restriction. Buda has been under exactly that kind of restriction since 2024. If your HOA has been telling you to keep a green lawn, the state of Texas has told them to stop.

Pet Turf for Buda's Young-Family Neighborhoods With Dogs

Pet turf is the other frequent request from Buda. The city\u2019s young-family neighborhoods mean a lot of dogs, and once-a-week watering does not flush pet waste from a living lawn the way daily irrigation would. In Texas heat, where pet waste breaks down faster and odors intensify, that drainage rate matters. The Texas Legislature designated Buda the \u201cOutdoor Capital of Texas\u201d in 2005, because it has more parkland per resident than any other city in the state. A yard you can use in August without a mower or a sprinkler fits that identity better than one that goes brown every time the Lovelady well drops. The point of living in the Outdoor Capital is to be outdoors. A lawn that stays green without water lets you do that.
